What is Yoga?

योगश्चित्तवृत्तिनिरोधः (Yoga Sutra 1:2)

yogaś-citta-vr̥tti-nirodhaḥ ॥2॥

When you are in a state of yoga, all misconceptions (vrittis) that can exist in the mutable aspect of human beings (chitta) disappear.

Swami Vivekananda uses the metaphor of a lake to illustrate this concept. Chitta is the mind-stuff, and Vrittis are the waves and ripples rising in it when external causes impinge on it. We cannot see the bottom of the lake because its surface is covered with ripples. It is only possible when the ripples have subsided, and the water is calm, for us to catch a glimpse of the bottom. If the water is muddy, the bottom will not be seen; if the water is agitated all the time, the bottom will not be seen. If the water is clear, and there are no waves, we shall see the bottom. That bottom of the lake is our own true SELF; the lake is the Chitta, and the waves are the Vrittis. And Yoga makes this happen!

What to expect from Personalised Yoga Plan?

When you decide to take personalised yoga plan, an initial assessment session will be conducted. This session helps in assessing the following:

  • Assess any existing health conditions or problems
  • Assess lifestyle and physical capability
  • Discuss reasons for seeking yoga
  • Create a phase-wise, personalised plan

Once the plan is established in this first consultation, the frequency of sessions is agreed upon and sessions are scheduled. From this point, yoga sessions will most likely include the following components:

  • Physical Postures (Asana)
  • Breathing Exercises
  • Guided Meditation and Visualization
  • Mantra Chanting
  • Diet and Nutrition recommendation
  • Homework (include ways to make a person self-sufficient)

Note: Personalised yoga planning and subsequent sessions can be conducted both online (Skype or similar platform) and offline (face-to-face).
